Cleaning between teeth: floss, picks and water flossers

Brushing alone leaves the sides of teeth half-cleaned. The tool you will use daily beats the perfect tool you ignore.

1

Why the sides matter

Toothbrush bristles do not reach far between teeth. Plaque left there is a common reason gums stay inflamed.

2

String floss

Wrap, curve into a C against each tooth, and slide gently under the gumline. Do not snap. Waxed floss can slide more easily in tight contacts.

3

Picks and interdental brushes

Small brushes sized for your gaps can clean faster for some people. Start with a size that fits without force.

4

Water flossers

A stream of water can flush food and disrupt plaque. Useful with braces, bridges, or limited dexterity. Follow the device directions.

5

Make it stick

Pair between-teeth cleaning with an existing habit, like after the evening brush. Consistency matters more than brand names.
