Plaque in plain words: the film that starts most problems

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria. Left alone, it hardens into tartar and irritates gums.

1

What plaque is

Within hours after cleaning, a soft film rebuilds on teeth. Bacteria in that film feed on sugars and starches and release acids that can soften enamel and inflame gums.

2

Soft vs hard

Soft plaque you can remove at home. Once it mineralizes into tartar, only a dental professional can scrape it off safely.

3

Technique over force

Hard scrubbing can wear enamel and push gums back. Short, gentle strokes along the gumline do more good.

4

Where it hides

Behind lower front teeth, along the gumline, and between molars are classic hideouts. Slow down in those spots.
