Why gums bleed
Plaque that sits along the gumline irritates the tissue. Irritated gums bleed more easily when you brush or clean between teeth. That early stage is often called gingivitis, and it is common.
Habits that help many people
- Brush twice a day for about two minutes, angling bristles toward the gumline.
- Clean between teeth every day with floss, picks, or a water flosser.
- Keep going for a week or two; bleeding often fades as gums calm.
- Avoid smoking or vaping when you can.
When it may be more than gingivitis
Gums that pull back, lasting bad breath, pus, or teeth that feel loose can point to a deeper problem that needs a dentist’s care. This page is general information, not a diagnosis.
Other factors
Pregnancy, diabetes, some medicines, stress, and grinding can all affect gums. Mention changes at your next visit.
